Essay Task:
Choose ONE of the three works studied so far this semester:

Vittorio De Sica’s Bicycle Thieves
J.M. Coetzee’s Disgrace
Bertolt Brecht’s Mother Courage and Her Children
Write an essay on ONE of the following questions:
1. De Sica’s Bicycle Thieves has been read as a landmark film of Italian neorealism.
Looking closely at the film, discuss some of the ways in which Bicycle Thieves
justifies such a reading and ways in which the film stands in contradiction to
neorealist principles.
2. How does Coetzee’s use of point of view in Disgrace represent post -Apartheid South
Africa’s race relations?
3. Mother Courage and Her Children is an explicitly ideological play. Identify and
critically evaluate some of the ways Brecht conveys his message.
4. Choose ONE work and explain how it represent s gender.
5. Choose ONE work and explain how its form conveys its meaning.
Your essay should develop an argument supported by examples (from your primary source)
and with reference to secondary sources.
• Primary sources are the film, novel, or play. You will draw examples from your
primary source in the form of quotations or descriptions of film elements.
• Secondary sources are scholarly books and articles. You will refer to secondary
sources in the form of quotations.
o You are welcome to use secondary sources from your bibliographic
assignment, if they prove useful to your chosen topic.
o You should use at least two secondary sources that are not in the Subject
Reader.
o You are expected to use a minimum of four secondary sources.
