NURS 4115 – Role of the Nurse—Public and Global Health

Students in this course will widen their perspectives related to promoting health and preventing disease as they examine health issues that transcend national borders, class, race, ethnicity, and culture. Students evaluate the role of the nurse in preserving and promoting health among diverse populations as well as the role in illness prevention and health promotion, protection, and maintenance of targeted populations. They also explore principles of epidemiology and the influencing sociopolitical factors that impact the health and well-being of humankind. Students engage in assignments designed to provide practical application of content on topical issues, such as infant mortality rates in the United States and abroad, infectious or communicable diseases, and implications of global climate change on health, among others. Finally, students consider and reflect on the nurse’s role as a leader in promoting positive social change in transforming the health of populations in the world.

NURS 4115 week 1 Discussion -The Role of the Nurse in Global Health.

In this week’s media presentation, Dr. Louise Fitzpatrick shared how health and disease are global issues. She pointed out that with the mobility of today’s population, health issues experienced in one area of the world are easily brought to other areas of the world through such means as travel and immigration.  NURS 4115 week 1 Discussion -The Role of the Nurse in Global Health. They can also be brought to a nation’s doorstep through the migration of animals, insects, and birds. Consider the spread of infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS, avian flu, H1N1, or SARS. These diseases have quickly crossed oceans and spread to multiple countries. They are a public health concern in the United States as well as other countries.

Based on your examination of the research, how well is the United States performing in terms of public health?
Think about what countries with worse outcomes could learn from countries with better outcomes.
Think about why nurses should be concerned with global health issues and what the role of the nurse should be in public health. NURS 4115 week 1 Discussion -The Role of the Nurse in Global Health.
