JANINE UTELL’S ENGAGEMENTS WITH NARRATIVE

In the Introduction to Janine Utell’s Engagements with Narrative, she lays out the premise of the book: That it will explore what a narrative is, and why we are drawn to them. Please answer and do the following: Who is Utell quoting here: “It is also natural for all to delight in works of imitation”? Select one of the opening lines from novels that Utell quotes and briefly describe how it is an invitation and an imperative. Utell (quoting) suggests that “Narrative is no less than a way of being in the world, a way of organizing reality in such a way as to give it meaning”. Give an example of a narrative around a historical event which illuminates this idea. (ie, the ways in which the Vietnam War is portrayed). Identify the elements which can be altered to create different meanings.
