The process where an organization or institute seeks out the public’s interests in plans and projects the organization plans to carry out in order to achieve transparency, efficiency and public

involvement on a large scale. Many large organizations such like oil company in Alberta, or major corporations that have significant impact on the community around them. Companies who have

large factories, plants, that affect the public’s interests and environment are usually encouraged to communicate and carry out public consulting in order to ensure that there brand is not

negatively affected. Companies working on a large scale sometimes are not aware of what or how they affect the community around them. It is important to insure as a brand that the majority

of people are satisfied with your brand or initiative. When the public does not support or endorse the corporation they are able to affect it negatively by destroying the companies name in the

media or leading large protests to shut down some plants. This can cost organizations millions of dollars and it is important to carry out public consultation on projects to ensure they are

carried out smoothly with little harm.
7.    What is an “interest group”? How are such organizations relevant to public consultation processes?
Interest group’s are a group or of people or an organization that is usually formally formed together to work towards a shared concern and to have an effect on public policy for their gain.

These Interest groups come in many different interests and sizes for example there exists smaller Interest group’s such as  japanese eraser manufacturer association and larger ones like

American Federation of Labor Congress of Industrial Organizations. These Interest group’s form outside of the companies and have an influence on the public consultation process. They

sometimes act as the voice to help act and enforce policies in these organizations. Interest groups and public consultation play together in forming public policy. Interest groups and public

consultation are one of the main methods by which many issues concerning public interest are placed into policy agenda.

public consultation program would help to rectify the situation? Why or why not?

Write an essay in answer to two of the six questions below. Each answer is worth twenty marks. Each essay should include references to the relevant theories, models and concepts discussed in

Units 1–3. Use examples to illustrate your points, and review the section of this manual titled “Writing Essays” before starting. Limit the length of each essay to between 1000 and 1200 words.
1.    In his seminal article on leadership, Abraham Zaleznik (1998) contends that “business leaders have much more in common with artists, scientists, and other creative thinkers than they

do with managers” (p. 87). Discuss.
2.    Unit 2 includes several articles on leadership featuring different contemporary business leaders. Compare two of these leadership styles and approaches. Note: Throughout this course,

when you are asked to compare items, you are expected to discuss both similarities and differences.
3.    Discuss the implications of mechanical and adaptive organizational assumptions.
4.    Consider Peter Drucker’s challenge. At its most powerful, communication brings about conversion, that is, a change of personality, values, beliefs, aspirations. But this is a rare

existential event, and one against which the basic psychological forces of every human being are strongly organized (Wieand, 2003, p. 1). Explain how this statement is relevant to leadership and

corporate communication.
5.    In a public consultation process, interest groups can be regarded as a detriment to the success of the program. Discuss this statement with regard to the purpose and intention of

public consultation programs; use the examples of public consultation programs offered in the DRR and your own experience.
6.    Desmond Connor (1996) observes that government and corporations often try the “traditional Decide–Announce–Defend” approach when it comes to decision–making, and “discover

that it is no longer effective” (p. 9). Drawing from the course material in Units 1–3, explain why this approach would be ineffective in a contemporary context.
